Lunch at Jack Astor’s – Friday October 19, 2012

So, yesterday my BFF and I stopped for lunch, at Jack Astor’s. I ordered the Jerk Pork and she ordered the Lamb Kafta.

Mine was OK. The pineapple salsa was great, but you can’t go wrong with pineapple in my book!! The jerk marinade on the pork had a bit of kick, not as much as I’m used to, when my hubby makes it at home though. The rice and peas that came with it though was SUPER bland 😦 Not sure if they did that, to bring out the flavour of the jerk pork more, but it was disappointing.

As for my BFF’s Lamb Kafta…it was a disaster!! It tasted like overly salted sausage, with confused seasoning. The spices weren’t Mediterranean, or even Middle Eastern. The clueless waiter ‘thought’ it may be Greek, but it wasn’t even close. So, I’m guessing it was a badly executed Tandoori seasoning, because of the red colour. And although I love Tandoori chicken, when it came to the ‘Lamb Kafta’ the colour was SO off-putting…at least for me. She was a trooper and ate most of it, to give it a chance, but that’s a dish I’ll NEVER order there.

We’ve been to Jack Astor’s numerous times over the years, and back when they first opened they had some pretty good dishes. Now it seems, ever since they’ve gone the ‘chi-chi’ route, with the ‘upscale’ decor and novel-length menu. They should’ve stuck to the no nonsense menu they had before. Unfortunately Jack Astor’s is really disappointing me, more and more, each time I go 😦 I do hate writing negative reviews for places, but sometimes, it’s just plain justified. Of course it’s up to all of you, to decide for yourselves right?! You may enjoy Jack Astor’s, more then I do, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that!!

What’s for Dinner Tonight!!

So, I still had a whole turkey breast left from Thanksgiving, that I didn’t know what to do with. Last year I had made soup, but this year I wanted to make something different. Then I came across this recipe from Chatelaine Magazine (A Canadian women’s mag, if you don’t already know), called Turkey Vegetable Biryani. I took a look at the recipe, and I had everything in the recipe already – BONUS. It turned out pretty good, with a nice flavour. If you’re looking for super authentic biryani flavour though, you’re out of luck, but otherwise it’s pretty decent tasting.

Thanksgiving for Us Canucks

So, this past long weekend, was Canada’s Thanksgiving…the kick off of the holidays – as far as I’m concerned!! We had a wonderful dinner on Saturday with turkey and all the trimmings!! We got to spend the evening with my parents, filled with great food and great conversation. Hopefully all of you Canucks out there, had just as wonderful a Thanksgiving as we did!!

Tonight’s Menu…Sushi and Flavoured Beer!!

We saw this pumpkin spice beer at the LCBO and had to try it. It was really good!! A slightly darker amber ale, with the yummy goodness of pumpkin and spice. A great accompaniment to any meal…especially for Fall 🙂

We also came across this Fruli Strawberry Beer, and decided to give it a try as well. And it doesn’t disappoint – with its fruity berry taste. This would be a great beer to have in the summer, perfectly chilled 🙂

We chased the beer down with some yummy sushi…salmon is my favourite…I could eat sushi anytime…omnomnom!!

Pumpkin and Butternut Squash…OH MY!!

It’s fall, and that means pumpkins and squash everywhere!! So, I decided to make one of my favourites…Crock Pot Pumpkin and Butternut Squash Soup. The recipe is REALLY simple, but I added vegetables and a cup of rice to beef it up, yet it still retains it’s awesome pumpkin flavour. Serve it with a dollop…or two of sour cream, sprinkle some nutmeg on top (optional) and a really nummy crusty bread…omnomnom!!
