My hubby and I were in Niagara Falls, for our 8th wedding anniversary weekend, we spend there each year. On our last day there, we were hungry for lunch, after checking out of the hotel so we decided to try out Mama Mia’s at the top of Clifton Hill. We had always wondered about the place, and finally took a chance and went in.

After being seated by the window, and perusing the menu, my hubby and I decided to have the lunch size Homemade Manicotti. It was made with fresh pasta, which is a nice change, as not many places make fresh pasta…at least at a reasonable price. Mama’s sauce was nicely seasoned and complimented the ricotta, parsley and egg stuffed manicotti. For a ‘luncheon’ size the manicotti was big, and definitely filled us up. We also couldn’t resist and ate the yummy, crusty Italian bread that was brought to the table. It was great for sopping up the leftover sauce…omnomnom.

We will definitely go back to Mama Mia’s again, and would recommend you check it out too, the next time you’re in Niagara Falls. The food is good, reasonably priced and the staff is very friendly – you won’t be disappointed!!

Pho Hung Vietnamese Restaurant – October 28, 2012

My hubby and I have always wanted to check this place out, every time we’ve driven by it. It always looks busy, so we thought they’re probably pretty good. They had the usual fare you find at a Vietnamese restaurant, which were all decently priced.

We decided to try their Pho, and we ordered their house special, that most Pho places have. It came with the usual rare beef, tendon, tripe and beef balls. As compared to the Pho 99 place we usually go to, this place made their Pho with a lot more onion and cilantro, which I LOVED. We also ordered fresh shrimp spring rolls, which came with peanut dipping sauce, that seemed thicker then the usual smooth dipping sauce. Which made me think they may make it in-house. All in all, our meal was very flavourful and as always, filled us up. We’ll definitely go back the next time we’re over that way and in the mood for Pho. If you’re ever in the area, and want good Pho, give them a try!!

Truly Thai Cuisine – Saturday October 20, 2012

After an evening at the Vaughan Mills Outlet Mall, my hubby and I were starving, so we went across the way to find somewhere to eat. We ended up at Truly Thai Cuisine. There was one other table occupied there, and we weren’t sure if this would be a good place to eat. Then again, it was late and their prices weren’t too bad, so we gave them a try.

My hubby and I both had the Chicken Lemongrass Soup, and we shared the Thai Spring Rolls, as a starter. The lemongrass soup was really good, flavourful and really hit the spot, on a cool rainy evening. The spring rolls didn’t disappoint. They were perfectly fried and crispy – just the way we like them.

We also ordered, Pad Thai and Thai Vegetable Green Curry (which we were introduced to by my sisters and brother-in-law) as our mains, to share. We ended up adding Coconut Rice, because it goes so well with the curry. The Pad Thai was perfectly cooked, and the Green Curry was creamy and SPICY!! It was awesome!! There was more then enough food for the two of us, and we left with full bellies. This is a place, we’ll definitely go back to again 🙂 If you’re in the area, and in the mood for Thai food, I would recommend you check them out, as I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!!

Lunch at Jack Astor’s – Friday October 19, 2012

So, yesterday my BFF and I stopped for lunch, at Jack Astor’s. I ordered the Jerk Pork and she ordered the Lamb Kafta.

Mine was OK. The pineapple salsa was great, but you can’t go wrong with pineapple in my book!! The jerk marinade on the pork had a bit of kick, not as much as I’m used to, when my hubby makes it at home though. The rice and peas that came with it though was SUPER bland 😦 Not sure if they did that, to bring out the flavour of the jerk pork more, but it was disappointing.

As for my BFF’s Lamb Kafta…it was a disaster!! It tasted like overly salted sausage, with confused seasoning. The spices weren’t Mediterranean, or even Middle Eastern. The clueless waiter ‘thought’ it may be Greek, but it wasn’t even close. So, I’m guessing it was a badly executed Tandoori seasoning, because of the red colour. And although I love Tandoori chicken, when it came to the ‘Lamb Kafta’ the colour was SO off-putting…at least for me. She was a trooper and ate most of it, to give it a chance, but that’s a dish I’ll NEVER order there.

We’ve been to Jack Astor’s numerous times over the years, and back when they first opened they had some pretty good dishes. Now it seems, ever since they’ve gone the ‘chi-chi’ route, with the ‘upscale’ decor and novel-length menu. They should’ve stuck to the no nonsense menu they had before. Unfortunately Jack Astor’s is really disappointing me, more and more, each time I go 😦 I do hate writing negative reviews for places, but sometimes, it’s just plain justified. Of course it’s up to all of you, to decide for yourselves right?! You may enjoy Jack Astor’s, more then I do, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that!!
